★★★★ Dal Segno: Friday Night at the Gig - a musical journey!

★★★★ Dal Segno: Friday Night at the Gig

Joseph Morley has obviously lived a fulsome life as a musician over many years and his new play, Dal Segno: Friday Night at the Gig, encapsulates a fascinating snap shot of the life of a disparate group of seven freelance musicians who play in a resident band at a club-venue.

Set in 1979, Dal Segno has some cleverly observed minutiae of time with some wonderful pointers to the mascots of the era, most notably the Sony Walkman, although a telephone answering machine was also up there as a must-have in some households!

Morley takes us into the intimate confines of the band-room and we become aware of the personalities and frailties of the disparate, even seemingly unconnected, musicians. A slow exploration of their fears, anxieties, hopes, thrills and associations slowly expose a far more personal bond between this seemingly disparate group of men.

Director Julia Faulkner cleverly manages the large cast in the confines of the band-room, yet ensures the ultimately linked elements of the story are not squandered. Terence Frisch as Ron cleverly holds together the many elements of story, Theo Watt as Chris betrays the enthusiasm of youth with great sincerity and Kevin Wathen as Mike is the skilled musician - equally skilled in his private life and his life’s experiences. This is one smartly observed set of characters, all intrinsically linked, all completely pertinent to the ultimate denouement and tremendously portrayed by a superb ensemble.

Dal Segno: Friday Night at the Gig is yet another excellent production at the Theatre at the Tabard, ensuring the run of splendid work in the current season continues apace!
