May Review 2018 inludes The Rink, Before 30, Red, This House and more

The Review Chap’s May Review 2018

Here are my brief thoughts and stars for the shows I’ve seen in May. Some shows have been reviewed more fully already, and some will appear shortly.

★★★★An Ideal Husband – Vaudeville Theatre
Star-studded production with some wonderful performances especially Freddie Fox appearing with his father, Edward Fox, for the first time. Stylish production made great by the wonderful ensemble.

★★★★★Twang!! – Union Theatre - see review
The second visit to my guilty pleasure.

★★★The Winslow Boy – Richmond Theatre
Elegant touring production of Terence Rattigan’s classic.

★★★★Ruthless – Arts Theatre - see review
Outrageously camp, cult theatrical farce starring Jason Gardener and the wonderful Tracie Bennett. Guaranteed to raise a smile, so long as you don’t take it too seriously!

★★★★★Before 30 – Theatre N16 - see review
Super-talented writer and actor, Tom Hartwell, presents his one-man show about the joys and horrors of turning 30. Billed as the writer for the millennial generation, he covers everything from the gig economy, the housing crisis and mental health issues. A brilliant piece of funny, incisive writing coupled with a tour de force performance.

★★★Soho Cinders – Questors Theatre
Jolly musical from Stiles and Drewe with animated performances from an enthusiastic cast.

★★★★HRHaitch – Union Theatre
Clever, witty, original and beautifully staged new musical. Fabulous ensemble, once again maintaining the high standards always achieved at the Union Theatre.

★★★★★Red – Wyndham's Theatre - see review
An acting masterclass from Alfred Molina and Alfred Enoch. Riveting 90 minutes of pure joy. The fascinating story of Mark Rothko and his work for the Seagram Building in New York. Irresistible theatre at its most sublime.

★★★★This House – Yvonne Arnaud Theatre
Excellent touring production of James Graham’s play about the machinations of the Whips office in parliament. Fascinating and spellbinding.

★★★★★Adam and Eve – Hope Theatre – see review
Exciting new writing from Tim Cook made even better by a wonderful ensemble. Fascinating to watch.

★★★★★The Rink – Southwark Playhouse - see review
Total Broadway gold. Thrilling production of Kander and Ebb’s musical with Caroline O’Connor giving a knock-out performance, supported by a wonderful supporting ensemble. Pure magic and razzmatazz, especially the tap routine on skates!

Looking forward to next month with Legally Blonde,
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, I Know You of Old, Quiz (again), It's Only Life, Guy - The Musical, The Moderate Soprano, The Rink (again) and, no doubt, many more along the way!
